Youth Orchestra

Located in the San Gabriel Valley area, the OLYMPIA YOUTH ORCHESTRA began its first season in 2000 under the leadership of Music Director and Conductor Fung Ho. Annual performances are given at the Historic San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. Students age 12 and above gain acceptance to the orchestra annually through open competitive auditions. Since its inception, the orchestra has had the opportunity to work with many well-known soloists and coaches, including members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Although the emphasis is being put on original compositions of “non-pop” repertoire, the orchestra has received opportunities to premiere new works by contemporary composers. The world-premiere performance of Concerto pour violoncelle et orchestre a cordes by Masatoshi Mitsumoto was given in the 2006/2007 season. Kingdom in Memory by Hong Diep received its world-premiere performance at the Walt-Disney Concert Hall on March 8, 2009 as part of the Youth Orchestra Day concert presented by the LA Phil.

The Olympia Youth Orchestra was selected as one of the Youth Orchestra Partners of the LA Phil for 2007-2009.

Since the orchestra is now combined with the CSULA University Orchestra, all rehearsals will be held at the Band Room (Rm 150) of the Music Building of CSULA, 5151 State University Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90032-8580 at 4:30-7PM on Sundays.

Eligibility:

Students learning any orchestral instruments, age 12 and up.

Audition Requirements:

  1. Any 2 or 3-octave scales
  2. One concerto movement or showpiece (Minimum requirement at MTAC C/M Level 7 as reference) of student’s own choice.
  3. Sight reading of orchestral excerpts (Provided by evaluators)

Audition times:

The time will be assigned by the order they are received and notified by mail and/or email within one week after the application deadline. All students should bring their own instruments and music to the audition. No piano accompaniment is necessary.

Application Fee:

$20 non-refundable audition fee. Checks should be made payable to OLYMPIA PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY and sent to 465 W Le Roy Ave, Arcadia, CA 91007-7306. Application fee will be credited towards tuition if student is accepted.

Tuition:

$600 per school year. Activities include minimum of two annual performances. Tuition fee will cover all expenses regarding music purchase, space rental and sectional coaching with professional staff members.
