Since the incorporation of the Olympia Philharmonic Society, a 501c3 California non-profit organization, in 1988, there has been many classical music concerts presented to the audiences of Southern California in the form of orchestra, chamber music concerts, and solo recitals.

I am extremely happy that this is the tenth season of the Olympia Youth Orchestra being established for the musical education of our next generation. The musicians on stage this afternoon were selected through our annual competitive audition. Due tot he busy and demanding academic schedule of the students, I have decided to hold only 12 to 14 weekly rehearsals in preparation for each concert. With the high standard of the selected students, the dedication and efficient rehearsal technique of the training staff, I am sure we can achieve our goal of providing excellent training for the orchestra members. I would like to thank Mr. Alan Mautner, string coach; and Mr. John Hoehne, brass coach for their hard work in helping out with the sectional rehearsals of the orchestra. Special thanks should go to all the parents for providing refreshments during our long and tiring rehearsals. I am also extremely proud of the fact that, in these past 2 years, the Olympia Youth Orchestra being selected as one of the Youth Orchestra Partners of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Partnership Program which granted us the opportunity to perform at the world famous Walt Disney Concert Hall on March 8, 2009. Now the orchestra is officially a Los Angeles Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Partner Emeritus.

As Music Director, now that we can provide free concerts to the public, my next goal is to eventually provide free tuition to all of the students participating in the Olympia Youth Orchestra in the future. Our sincere gratitude goes to the Hennings-Fischer Foundation for its generous support; without this grant, this season would not have happened. Since we are performing in the beautiful history San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, expenses are high. If you feel that there is a need for music for our next generation, please do not hesitate to send in your tax deductible contributions to the Olympia Philharmonic Society at 465 Le Roy Ave, Arcadia, CA 91007-7306. At a time of such economic turmoil and budget cuts in the education system, your kind sponsorship will be welcomed with heartfelt appreciation. I am volunteering a large portion of my time and effort for the musical education of these talented young people and will continue to arrange performing opportunities for the orchestra so that the efforts of the students during the rehearsals are not wasted. I am also happy to have joint performances with the students of USC and Cal State L.A. for our students so they can have better experiences in performing with musicians outside of the orchestra. Students from the Cal State L.A. Orchestral Internship Program with the Olympia Youth Orchestra are also performing with us in this concert.

Thank you for coming this afternoon and we hope to see you again at our next concert on February 28, 2010 at 3:30 PM, which will be a joint concert with 3 other youth orchestras in town. This will take place at the Sexon Auditorium of the Pasadena City College. Please also reserve the date of our final concert this season on May 23, 2010 at 3 PM back here at this beautiful San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. We will be featuring cellist Ruslan Biryukov performing the Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra, an incredibly challenging piece for both the soloist and the orchestra. Plans are also in place to have concert tours for the orchestra to visit other countries in the near future.

Please feel free to visit our website at http://www.olympiaphil.org if you would like to make a comment, join the orchestra, make a donation, or contact us for any reason. Until then…

Sincerely,
Fung Ho
